Dakar, Day 13 : HS RallyeTeam heading for Top Ten up to the last dune

MOTORSPORT - DAKAR 2013 - PART 2January 18th 2013 – For more than 230 kilometers, it looked like a really good day for Matthias Kahle and Dr. Thomas M. Schünemann – until two cars blocked the way and they got stuck. Despite the misfortune, the HS RallyeTeam is still involved in an exciting four-part competition for the tenth position and there are still two stages to go.

Matthias Kahle and Dr. Thomas M. Schünemann had to set off for the twelfth stage of the Rallye Dakar from an inopportune position. The SAM 30D CC started behind a convoy of seven trucks that had shown a very good performance under the difficult track conditions the day before and thus literally had been “washed” to the front. In the winding roads at the beginning of the stage from Fiambalá to Copiapó, the 4WD prototype of the HS RallyeTeam naturally was a lot faster. Once again, Kahle/Schünemann had to swallow a plenty of sand, although all the trucks gave way to them.

On the first 37 kilometers, the Germans overtook four trucks and a car and achieved the 17th time at the first Checkpoint. They had a clear run and the SAM operated faultlessly so that they drew nearer to the Top Ten every minute. Suddenly, on the last big dune, two other vehicles blocked the track. As they tried to get out of the way, the SAM pilots got stuck in softer sand. This unintentional maneuver made them lose more than 20 minutes. Nevertheless, the drivers of the HS RallyeTeam took time to help competitor Regis Delahaye (MD Buggy), who got stuck in the sand shortly after. Unfortunately, the relief operation was not crowned with success as the tow rope broke.

Kahle/Schünemann reached the finish line of the 319 kilometers long Special on position 19, by 45 minutes behind champion of the day Nani Roma (Mini All4 Racing). This leads to an exciting duel for the tenth place in the overall qualification, currently hold by Geoffrey Olholm (Toyota Hilux Pickup). The Australian only has a lead of 2.49 minutes on Boris Garafulic (Mini All4 Racing), 19.52 minutes on Kahle/Schünemann and 22.39 minutes on Lucio Alvarez (also Toyota). The HS RallyeTeam moves up one position on this twelfth stage of the Dakar, and would even rank #10 without the incident in the dunes.

Matthias Kahle: „For today, the organizer has created a really challenging competition that demanded everything from the team. The race went pretty well for us, until we reached the last dune and did not have any chance to take the optimal way. We lost 21 minutes digging in the sand. Otherwise everything went excellently. On a slope, we have slightly ruined the front of the SAM, but the damage is only cosmetic.”

Dr. Thomas M. Schünemann: „The navigation was a real challenge today, but we did not have any problems and always found the right way. Our starting position behind the trucks was not the best, especially as the first 18 kilometers of the track were shaped by winding roads. Of course the dust of the trucks impeded us a bit, but all drivers were fair and gave way to us – very comradely! The fight for the Top Ten is extremely thrilling, but this does not affect our tactics. We will keep on driving at our pace.”

Preview: Stage 12, Copiapó-La Serena, Total Distance: 735 km, Special: 441 km

The last dunes of the Dakar 2013 are waiting on the stage from Copiapó to La Serena. The sandy part makes up one third of the competition and perhaps offers the last chance to secure a good position. The last part of the Special is characterized by broad gravel streets. The teams should still watch out in order not to commit a decisive mistake shortly before the end.
