Dakar,Day 12 : HS RallyeTeam struggles through the floods

MOTORSPORT - DAKAR 2013 - PART 2January 17th 2013 – For most of the cars, the Fiambalá stage was over before they reached the feared white dunes. Two raging rivers made it impossible to continue driving. Matthias Kahle and Dr. Thomas M. Schünemann got through this challenge, but the SAM has some wounds.

Rain in the desert: Already for the second time during the Rallye Dakar 2013, a stage had to be stopped early due to heavy rainfalls from the Andes’ foothills. At kilometer 69 and 85 of the Special in the white Dunes of Fiambalá, two streams that are actually harmless or even completely dried out, developed into raging rivers so that the organizer had to stop the Special at Checkpoint 1. Even experienced pilots like Leonid Novitskyi (Mini All4 Racing) and Pascal Thomasse (MD Buggy) struggled to get through the water and reached the goal with several hours of delay. Their blessings in disguise: They got the time of the last car that regularly had finished the stage and only lost 23 minutes.

The HS RallyeTeam set about the first kilometers of the competition with great care in order not to damage the tyres and suspension of the SAM 30D CC on one of the huge rocks that appeared on the washed out streets. Matthias Kahle and Dr. Thomas M. Schünemann did not want to run a risk on one of the river crossings. The Germans made a detour and searched for a better suited way to cross the floods. Kahle/Schünemann damaged the subfloor of the SAM 30D CC on a big stone, but could continue their journey. The team of SAM will bring the 4WD prototype back into shape in the Biwak.

The HS RallyeTeam arrived 19th at Checkpoint 1, by 20 minutes behind stage winner Robby Gordon (Hummer H3). In the overall classification, Kahle/Schünemann maintain position 13. The distance to Geoffrey Olholm (Toyota Hilux Pickup, rank #11) and Boris Garafulic (Mini All4 Racing, rank #12) has increased slightly, but both are still within reach with a lead of less than 20 minutes.

Matthias Kahle: „We drove really carefully today, because our main objective was to finish the stage with an intact car. The first kilometers were extremely hard, there were gigantic stones all over the track. It was a reasonable decision to stop the competition. You cannot hold a rallye race under such circumstances. Although we were so careful, the subfloor got damaged by a stone we could not see in the water. So, unfortunately, we brought some work for the SAM mechanics. But they will put it right tonight.”

Dr. Thomas M. Schünemann: „The start really was unbelievably stony and difficult. When we had to cross the water, we decided to search for a more secure way. So we drove along the river, what made us lose a lot of time. But now we got through it. There are still three stages to come that we will tackle highly concentrated.”

Preview: Stage 12, Fiambalá-Copiapó, Total Distance: 715 km, Special: 319 km

The eleventh stage of the Dakar starts with the second crossing of the Andes over the Paso San Francisco. With the return to the Chilean Atacama Desert, the hardest rallye of the world slowly moves towards the finishing line. The 319 kilometers long Special on the way to Copiapó serves with all difficulties the marathon rallye sport has to offer, including tremendous dunes and stony off-road tracks.
