Dakar, Day 10 : HS RallyeTeam benefits from rallye experience and shows best performance

MOTORSPORT - DAKAR 2013 - PART 2January 15th 2013 – Full-throttle into the second half: Matthias Kahle and Dr. Thomas M. Schünemann reached the ninth place on the longest stage of the Rallye Dakar 2013 – their best result of the day. On the gravel tracks between San Miguel de Tucumán and Cordoba, the pilots of the HS RallyeTeam profited from their excellent rallye driving skills.

Matthias Kahle already had been looking for this stage after the day-off before he left for South America. The fast, technically challenging gravel tracks around Cordoba, on which drift experts are totally in their element, are also part of the Argentinian Rallye World Cup. Sevenfold German Rallye Champion Kahle and his navigator Dr. Thomas M. Schünemann look back on many years of experience in this related discipline and could put their knowledge into practice to reach a sensational result on this ninth day of the Rallye Dakar.

Over the distance of 593 kilometers on this longest Special of the Dakar, the pilots of the HS Rallyeteam notched up the ninth best time amongst 106 cars which had set of for the second part of the world’s hardest rallye. The SAM 30D CC had completely been revised during the day-off, operated faultlessly in the whole competition and enabled Kahle/Schünemann to make a great leap forward in the overall classification.

The Germans could not only improve by three positions and now rank #13 in the car classification, but also got closer to some of their next competitors. They are only by 38 minutes behind Pascal Thomas (MD Buggy), who currently holds position 10 – since the first day, the HS RallyeTeam has never again been so close to the Top Ten. Boris Garafulic (Mini All4 Racing, #11) and Geoffrey Olholm (Toyota Hilux Pickup, rank #12) are within direct reach with a lead of only 18 and 14 minutes.

Matthias Kahle: „This was a real rallye track with permanent changes of rhythm. Some parts were faster, some slow and curvy. In my view, this has been the hardest and most demanding competition so far. I am really exhausted. Once again, the SAM drove brilliantly. Our only problem today was the dust of the cars in front of us. Tomorrow we will set off for the Special as the ninth car, I suppose we won’t have to swallow so much dust again.”

Dr. Thomas M. Schünemann: „We started the competition as the 18th car and got stuck in the dust of the cars in front for some 150 kilometers. It is extremely complicated to overtake others on such tracks. Nevertheless, we constantly moved forward and could profit from some problems of our competitors. We have significantly improved in the overall classification as will continue like that.”

HS Team Coordinator Frank Färber: „What a great start into the second half. That is the reward for the hard work of the mechanics during the day-off. The team of SAM has completely revised the car: Transmission, breaks, clutch, die joints of the suspension, all three differentials and so on.

Preview: Stage 10, Cordoba-La Rioja, Total Distance: 632 km, Special: 353 km

Steering wheel artists like Matthias Kahle will take pleasure in the tenth stage of the Dakar. The 353 kilometers long Special begins shortly after the start in Cordoba and alternates     between curvy and fast passages and wooded areas with barren plateaus. For sand and dunes, the participants have to wait one more day…
