Dakar, Day 8 : HS RallyeTeam comes through tsunami in the desert

Sam Stage 8_3Januar 13th 2013 – Land under at Rallye Dakar: The eighth stage of the world’s hardest rallye was hit by a violent storm and had to be stopped. Matthias Kahle and Dr. Thomas M. Schünemann had been heading towards the Top 20 shortly before the end of the competition when suddenly a wave came rolling towards them.

The eighth day of the Rallye Dakar started with unusual news: The first part of the originally 470 kilometers long Special had been canceled due to heavy rain during the night. Thus, the rated distance was reduced to only 182 kilometers – and even those did not run smoothly. Some 100 kilometers before the end, the road lead through a dried up riverbed.

Matthias Kahle and Dr. Thomas M. Schünemann were guiding the SAM 30D CC through this passage when a flood wave – caused by a heavy rain shower in the region – came rolling towards them. “The water came completely unexpected”, comments navigator Schünemann. “The car was immediately submerged in water till the lower edge of the door. We quickly tried to save ourselves to a spit of land. But first, we had to clear away the steep slope with Pascal Thomasse in the MD Buggy in order to get out of the riverbed.”

Together with the Frenchman, Kahle/Schünemann finally managed to free themselves from the flash flood and reach the finish of the Special. There they were informed that the Special would be neutralized as it was impassable. Only a handful of teams had finished the competition under regular conditions, all others – as usual in such cases – were ascribed the time of the last driver who had completed the stage.

Because of the neutralization, the ranking only changed amongst the top positions. Matthias Kahle and Dr. Thomas M. Schünemann still remain on rank #16 overall. They are by 7.20 minutes behind the overall-15th Geoffrey Olholm (Toyota Hilux Pickup) and have a lead of 15.58 and 18.07 minutes over their pursuers Adam Malysz (also Toyota) and Christian Lavieille (Dessoude Buggy). After the well-earned day off, Kahle/Schünemann will start with a deficit of only 3:18.36 hours behind leading Stéphane Peterhansel (Mini All4 Racing) into the second half of the rallye – the HS RallyeTeam has never been so close to the top at half-time during their previous six Dakar participations!

Matthias Kahle: „At the beginning I did not find this competition so exciting. The track only went straight forward, until the rush of events started. I have never experienced anything comparable before. I am glad that we now can take a day off. The rallye has been extremely exhausting up to now. We are really satisfied with our performance. Der SAM is reliable and we could improve our driving skills every day.”

Dr. Thomas M. Schünemann: „Today was a sheer adventure! Like a tsunami in the desert – amazing! My dad once told me: ‘More people drown in the desert than die of thirst’ – now I know why. Despite these weather caprioles we have safely reached the day off. The SAM operated reliably. We are really satisfied with the work of our team. In the second half, we will continue like this.”

Preview: Stage 9, Tucumán-Cordoba, Total Distance: 852 km, Special: 592 km

After the day off, the second part will start with the longest competition of the whole rallye. A neutralized section divides the 592 kilometers long Special from San Miguel de Tucumán to Cordoba into two parts. While the first part at the beginning leads through fast and unbelievably hard tracks, the second part with curvy gravel roads in the forest is made for rallye drivers like Matthias Kahle
