Dakar, Day 3 : Double catch-up race for the HS RallyeTeam

SAM down Stage 3January 8th 2013 : Twelve places improvement for the SAM 30D CC, five for the racetruck: While many well-known competitors were stumbling in the soft fesh-fesh sand, the HS RallyeTeam demonstrated an outstanding performance. Matthias Kahle and Dr. Thomas M. Schünemann mastered the challenging terrain without any faults and even touched up on the Top 10.

After they got used to the conditions the day before, Matthias Kahle and Dr. Thomas M. Schünemann regained their former strength during the third stage of the Rallye Dakar. Right at the beginning, a difficult dune passage was waiting for the teams. While lots of direct competitors had to get out their shovels and sand sheets, the HS RallyeTeam mastered not only this passage, but the whole competition faultlessly and without getting stuck. Even a broken transverse link at the front left could not stop Kahle/Schünemann. The reward: During this day, the Germans moved up to rank #11 in the daily qualification, and only shortly before the end of the race had to let some favorite drivers like Giniel de Villiers (Toyota Hilux Pickup) or Orlando Terranova (BMW X3 CC) pass.

They finally made it to place 19 in the daily qualification – by less than ten minutes behind the Top Ten. With this excellent result, Kahle/Schünemann improved from rank 34 to 22 in the overall classification by 1:27.10 minutes behind the new leader Stéphane Peterhansel (Mini All4 Racing).

MOTORSPORT - DAKAR 2013 - PART 1Mathias Behringer, Hugo Kupper and Michael Karg in the racetruck of the HS RallyeTeam also look back on a brilliant day. The German-Dutch trio now manages the new Maurer-MAN prototype more easily, notched up the twelfth time of today’s competition and moves up to rank #20 overall.

Matthias Kahle: „This day was really hard and exhausting. The soft fesh-fesh sand challenged all of us. Even if the stage was only 243 kilometers long, she is known to be one of the Dakar’s most difficult stages. Our suspension at the left front got damaged by a stone, but fortunately the SAM is so stable that we hardly recognized it. All in all, I am highly satisfied today. We had learned a lot yesterday and did not make any mistakes this time.”

Dr. Thomas M. Schünemann: „Today we left the Biwak as the 39th car and crossed the finish line as 23rd. This is a result we can be proud of! The offroad tracks at the beginning have been really dusty, but provided sufficient space to overtake slower competitors. Matthias proved his good overview on the challenging parts of the track and always decided for the right speed. We neither got stuck, nor lost our way – it may go on like this!”

Mathias Behringer: „We get more and more used to the Maurer-MAN every day. Today we got stuck for the first time because we had not adjusted the tyre pressure before a sandy passage and lost some 20 minutes – and we finally only lagged 30 minutes behind the top position. Unbelievable! We are extremely happy and looking forward to the next days.”

Preview: Stage 3, Nazca-Arequipa, Total Distance: 717 km, Special: 288 km

Many competitors are reluctant to remember the hard stage between Nazca and Arequipa, on which even some of the best “dune surfers” lost valuable time last year. The dream of 1001 dunes can quickly become a nightmare, with this year’s course being even more demanding than in 2012. The learning phase in the desert goes into the next round for Matthias Kahle and Dr. Thomas M. Schünemann!
