January 5th 2013 – The prelude is done: Matthias Kahle and Dr. Thomas M. Schünemann have mastered the first day of the Rallye Dakar 2013. In the soft sand of the first Special, they took things easy and got accustomed to the SAM 30D CC again after a six-month break.

Easy job at the beginning of the world’s hardest rallye: 449 of 459 initially registered cars crossed the starting ramp in Lima on Saturday morning from 7.50 a.m. local time to tackle the Rallye Dakar 2013. The ceremonial act with the Pacific Ocean in sight highly contrasted with the challenges awaiting the drivers during the next two weeks. Visitors were filled with enthusiasm when the adventurers started for their arduous journey through South America. Today’s trip consisted in a 250 kilometers long connection stage as well as a 13 kilometers short Special around Pisco.

As usual, the HS Rallye Team took that first day easy. Matthias Kahle and Dr. Thomas M. Schünemann used this prelude stage to get accustomed to the SAM 30D CC again after their six-month break from competitions since the Silk Way Rallye in July 2012. The highly-experienced duo fought its way through the soft sand in 8:55 minutes and notched up the 28th time in the automobile ranking – by 1:15 minutes behind stage winner Carlos Sainz (Qatar Red Bull Buggy). The first Special appeared to be made for the buggies. The 2WD vehicles with their enormous suspension travel hold four positions amongst the top five. Due to the short distance of today’s competition, the times are multiplied by a factor 3. One second behind is counted as three seconds.

MAN podiumMathias Behringer, Hugo Kupper and Michael Karg with the racetruck of the HS Rallye Team did not have the best start. The re-built prototype of Maurer-MAN could not perform at its best due to a problem with the turbocharger and completed the stage 12:10 minutes behind winner Gerard de Rooy (Iveco). After this first day, Behringer/Kupper/Karg rank 58 with a lag of 36:20 and hype to start a brilliant race to catch up tomorrow.

Matthias Kahle: „Today’s competition was not that hard, it was more a really relaxed start of this tough rallye. The SAM was easy to handle in the sand and we felt well from the first moment, even if it had been relatively long ago that we last drove this car. The results of today are not of great account, we did not risk anything. But tomorrow, the real race will begin – with a 242 kilometers competition and many route sections leading through the dunes. I am sure an important day is waiting for us.”

Dr. Thomas M. Schünemann: „The atmosphere in Lima was great this morning. You really get goosebumps seeing this crowd of people. The transport stage was not so pleasant due to high traffic on the Panamericana, but this is a part of it. We took things slowly and did not pay attention to the time. After all, you cannot win such a hard and long rallye on 13 kilometers.”

Preview: Stage 2, Pisco-Pisco, Total distance: 327 km, Special: 242 km

Already on the second day, a hard challenge is waiting for our drivers: A 242 kilometers long Special, dominated by 50 percent of sandy route sections and the first dune sections. As beautiful as the landscape around Pisco may be – it is just as treacherous. Some drivers will have to get out their sand shovel and the soft subsoil demands a lot from the engines.
